OUR MISSION
THE FESTIVAL
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
WHO WE ARE
Flup House is a publishing house born from FLUP, Rio de Janeiro’s literary festival. It extends the work of our annual festival by bringing books, writers, and readers into lasting relationships across languages and geographies. Our mission is to broaden our understanding of the Black Atlantic by placing Black Brazilian and Indigenous writing and thought in sustained conversation with authors and readers across the world. This work moves in several directions: bringing seminal texts into Portuguese while supporting the translation and international circulation of works written in Portuguese. Drawing on the strength of FLUP, we seek to create the conditions for these texts to be read, discussed, and brought into new intellectual and literary relationships.
At the heart of this project is an understanding of translation as intellectual and cultural exchange. The works we publish invite readers to engage with histories, concepts, and literary traditions that remain unevenly accessible across languages. They also ask us to reconsider how we understand the Black Atlantic through encounters with Indigenous thought, attending to the distinct histories and experiences from which these conversations emerge. Our ambition is to sustain, beyond the days of the festival, the exchanges that begin there. Through publishing and translation, we give these conversations wider audiences and the time to deepen.
